The following individuals have indicated their willingness to provide their expertise and advice to the Institute on the dispute resolution needs of business and social enterprise as well as opportunities for innovation.
Mr. Bennett served as Chair of the Board of Directors of Discovery Air Inc. from August 2008 to December 2012. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1962 and practised commercial law in Toronto from 1964 to 1979. Thereafter, he held senior management positions with a number of corporations. He has been a member of the Boards of Directors of Air Nova Inc., Algoma Steel Inc., Bracknell Corporation, deHavilland Holdings Inc., Fortis Inc. and a number of private companies. Mr. Bennett has served as the Chair of the Board of the Ontario Casino Corporation and the Chair of the Board of Canadian Tire Corporation, Limited.
Buzz Hargrove, O.C.
Mr. Hargrove is the former national president of the Canadian Auto Workers’ union, a position he held for three terms, from 1992 to 2008. He has extensive bargaining experience, having negotiated with major corporations such as General Motors, Chrysler, Ford, Air Canada, Bombardier, Alcan, CN Rail and others. Mr. Hargrove is an author of several books and the former co-host of Business News Network’s Buzz Cuts. He has served as Ombudsman to the National Hockey League Player’s Association. Currently, Mr. Hargrove is a Distinguished Visiting Professor and Co-director of the Centre for Labour Management Relations located in the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University.
The Right Honourable Joe Clark, P.C., C.C.
The Right Honourable Joe Clark has served as Canada’s Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Minister of Constitutional Affairs, and Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition. As a private citizen, he has been active internationally, as an investor and advisor. Mr. Clark is vice-chair of the Global Leadership Foundation – a not-for-profit group of former Heads of Government and international experts which helps leaders of developing countries undertake politically-sensitive reforms. He works actively with the National Democratic Institute, the Commonwealth, and the European Union in helping build strong institutions, achieving consensus and fostering open and democratic government. He is a member of the Inter-American Dialogue, and the Friends of the InterAmerican Charter, serves on the boards of commercial and not-for-profit organizations in Canada and internationally, and is an “Honourary Witness” of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, seeking to heal the trauma of abuse of young Aboriginals in residential schools in Canada. Mr. Clark’s new book “How We Lead: Canada in a Century of Change” was published in the autumn of 2013.
The Honourable Frank Iacobucci, C.C., Q.C., LL.D. (Hon.), L.S.M.
The Honourable Frank Iacobucci is counsel to Torys LLP. He has had a distinguished career in private practice, academia, government and the judiciary. He began his career in 1964 as a lawyer in New York. In 1967, he joined the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto, and was a professor of law there until 1985. He has also served as Vice-President, Internal Affairs, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Vice-President and Provost at the University of Toronto. In 1985, Mr. Iacobucci was appointed Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General for Canada; and in 1988, Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Canada. Mr. Iacobucci served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada between 1991 and 2004. Since leaving the Supreme Court, Mr. Iacobucci has acted for the provincial and federal governments in matters involving aboriginal rights and national security. He has also conducted mediations and arbitrations involving private disputes.
George A. Cohon, O.C., O.Ont.
Mr. Cohon is Founder of McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada Limited and Founder of McDonald’s in Russia. Mr. Cohon was born in Chicago, Illinois. He practiced corporate law in Chicago from 1961-67, then moved to Toronto as the licensee of McDonald’s Corporation. He served as President, Chairman and CEO of McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada for 25 years. McDonald’s in Canada now numbers over 1,430 restaurants and has sales of over $3 billion per year and employs over 80,000 people coast-to-coast.
Ignat Kaneff, O.Ont., LL.D. (Hon.)
Mr. Kaneff is a renowned developer and philanthropist whose contributions have supported education, the arts, and health and social services, especially community living for intellectually-challenged children. Mr. Kaneff created the I. Kaneff Charitable Foundation in 1986. He tirelessly contributes to charitable organizations and initiatives across the Greater Toronto Area. He has been an anchor supporter of Community Living Mississauga, the Credit Valley Hospital Foundation, the University of Toronto in Mississauga and the Osgoode Law School building campaign.
Purdy Crawford, C.C., Q.C. (1931-2014)

Ms. Lang is the senior business correspondent for CBC News, contributing regularly to CBC News The National. She also anchors The Lang & O’Leary Exchange on CBC News Network, appearing with “dragon” Kevin O’Leary. Lang is a veteran business journalist who got her start at The Globe and Mail before moving to the Financial Post, first as a technology reporter and later as the paper’s New York correspondent where she worked for CNN as an anchor and reporter. She recently wrote a book, “The Power of Why,” (HarperCollins) about innovation and curiosity.
Jim Dinning is chair of Western Financial Group as well as chancellor of the University of Calgary. He is a graduate of Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Commerce and a Masters in Public Administration. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Calgary in 2002. He is the former chair of Export Development Canada. His career spans both government and business. He was first elected to the Alberta Legislative Assembly in 1986, was re-elected twice thereafter. During his 11 years in office, he served in a number of cabinet portfolios, notably as minister of education and provincial treasurer. He serves as director of a number of public and private companies and not-for-profit organizations.
Brandt C. Louie, OBC, LLD., F.C.A.
Mr. Louie is Chairman & CEO of H.Y. Louie Co. Limited and Chairman of the Board of London Drugs Limited. Brandt serves as a Director on many boards, some of which are the Royal Bank of Canada, Brain Canada; Gairdner Foundation; Food Marketing Institute; Vancouver Foundation; The Historica-Dominion. He is Chair of Grosvenor Americas and Governor of the Vancouver Board of Trade/World Trade Centre and B.C. Business Council; a member of the Canadian Judicial Council, Chairman’s Advisory Group and Chancellor Emeritus of Simon Fraser University. Brandt is a philanthropist whose contributions have supported education, health and the arts over many decades.
Senator Nicole Eaton
Senator Eaton is a philanthropist who has devoted much of her life to serving her community in varying degrees through her participation and leadership in a number of charitable organizations, foundations and the arts. Presently she is a Director of St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation, a Director of the National Ballet of Canada and the Chair of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies at the University of Toronto. Ms. Eaton was also a columnist for the newspaper the National Post and is the co-author of two publications.
Ms. Macleod is a mediator in Toronto. She is a former Assistant Deputy Attorney General and currently an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School and Co-Director of the LL.M. Program in Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Mr. Emond is a Professor at the Osgoode Hall Law School. Since 1995, Professor Emond has been the Director of Osgoode’s Professional LLM in Alternative Dispute Resolution, the first program of its kind in North America and one that has been offered for 17 consecutive years through Osgoode Professional Development. Since the mid-1990s, Professor Emond’s research and teaching interests have been in the dispute resolution field. He edited and contributed to a number of books and articles in the field. In 2000, Professor Emond was the co-recipient of the OBA Award of Excellence in Alternative Dispute Resolution. From time to time, Professor Emond is retained as a mediator or negotiation tactician on disputes ranging from highly complex multi-party public disputes to two-to-three party commercial disputes.
The Honourable Bob Rae, P.C., O.C., O.Ont., Q.C.
The Honourable Bob Rae was the Premier of Ontario from 1990 to 1995 and the interim leader of the Liberal Party of Canada from 2011 to 2013. He was elected eleven times to federal and provincial parliaments. He is an arbitrator and mediator and a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the University of Toronto School of Public Policy and Governance. Mr. Rae is also chief negotiator for First Nations in talks with the Ontario government about development of the Ring of Fire, an area in the James Bay Lowlands of Northern Ontario where mining exploration is under way. He has been appointed to conduct reviews of post-secondary school education in Ontario and the Air India bombing of 1985. Mr. Rae is a Rhodes Scholar and a Senior Fellow of Massey College.
The Honourable James Farley, Q.C.
The Honourable James Farley is Senior Counsel to McCarthy Tétrault LLP, where he is working with the business law, bankruptcy and restructuring and litigation groups on a firm-wide basis. He provides clients with strategic business, litigation and insolvency-related advice. Mr. Farley was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice, then named the Supreme Court of Ontario, in 1989. Since its inception in 1991 and until his retirement on May 1, 2006, he acted as supervising judge of the Commercial List in Toronto.
The Honorable Associate Chief Justice John D. Rooke
The Honorable Associate Chief Justice Rooke received his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Saskatchewan in 1970 and his Master of Laws in Dispute Resolution from the University of Alberta in 2010. Prior to his appointment he was a partner with Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer Barristers & Solicitors, Calgary, Alberta. In 1987 he was appointed Queen’s Counsel. He was appointed: Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta (resident in Calgary) effective April 8, 1991; Associate Chief Justice (resident in Edmonton) October 22, 2009; Deputy Judge of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories, February 28, 2007; and Deputy Judge of the Nunavut Court of Justice, September 23, 2010.
Peter Godsoe, O.C., O.Ont.
Mr. Godsoe began his career with Scotiabank in 1966 in Ottawa. After serving in Toronto, Montreal and New York, he rose rapidly through various positions and was elected President and Chief Operating Officer in 1992, Chief Executive Officer in 1993 and Chairman in 1995. Mr. Godsoe retired from Scotiabank on March 2, 2004. Mr. Godsoe currently serves as the Chairman of Sobeys Inc. and a director of a number of private companies. In addition, he is a Vice Chairman of the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies and a Director of a number of non-profit institutes including the Canadian Council of Christians & Jews and Mount Sinai Hospital.

Stephen Grant, L.S.M., Cert. F. Arb.
Mr. Grant is a principal at Grant & Sadvari, practicing family law and ADR in Toronto. He has appeared in courts across the country as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. Mr. Grant is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, also the first President of the Canadian Chapter. Mr. Grant is the editor of the Advocates’ Journal and co-editor of the ACTL Bulletin. He was awarded the Law Society Medal in 2006.
Arthur Scace, C.M., Q.C.
Mr. Scace is a former partner and Chairman of McCarthy Tétrault LLP. He is also Past Chairman of The Bank of Nova Scotia and has served on the boards of directors of numerous public companies, including The Canada Life Assurance Company, Gerdau Ameristeel and various companies within The Brompton Group of Companies. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of WestJet and of Nexen Inc. He is Past President and Chairman of the Canadian Opera Company.
Mr. Segal is the former Deputy Attorney General of Ontario, a position he held from 2004 to 2012. Prior to that, Mr. Segal served as the Assistant Deputy Attorney General of the Ministry of Attorney General’s Criminal Law Division and Chief Prosecutor for the Province of Ontario from 1997 to 2004. In that capacity, he prosecuted some of the highest profile criminal cases in Ontario. Mr. Segal is the author of numerous legal publications and is a sought-after speaker at legal conferences.
